It's been a long time coming, but one of the scene's highly-anticipated albums is now upon us. Evol Intent's opus, Era of Diversion, plays like the various wars the United States engages in worldwide: controlled chaos. Straight from the intro we are given soundbytes and lyrics from J Messinian, echoing sentiments about the state of calm that is placed on the US nation, while we know that hell is boiling over both inside and outside of our borders.

Speaking of borders, the E.I. boys don't use 'em. Many might have been looking for a strictly DnB affair, but this album spans the sounds they love: you get straight up Hip-Hop (''Death, Lies & Videotape'', featuring Cypher Linguistics), some balls-to-the-wall hardcore metal styles (the stunning ''Smoke & Mirrors'' with BANE's Aaron Bedard on vocals), Aphex Twin-esque IDM noodlings (tracks like ''I'm Happy Your Grave Is Next To Mine'' & ''The Curtain Falls''), some interesting Jungle stylings (''5:30PM'' and ''South London'') and even a spot of Dubstep (''Gunpowder Plot'').

While this sounds like a tall order, all tracks make sense – this is a very cohesive 19-track album, with each style of music taken on in Evol Intent's style, from the glitches to the odd melodies and changes that just, well, work. For those who got into E.I. for their pulsating DnB, you are not left behind: desired plates like ''Odd Number'' (with Ewun & Vicious Circle), Spor's ''8 Bit Bitch'' remix, ''Mutiny'', and the 'straight-from-the-DOA-forum' anthem ''Dead On Arrival'' (as well as beautiful gems like ''Middle Of The Night'') are all included in the full-course meal.

At the end of the day, it's one thing to be pretentious, and try to force different moods and sounds into your music, and 9 times out of 10, that just doesn’t work. What the Evol Intent Trio has done is almost paid homage to the various styles that have influenced them over the years, wrapping their head around what makes that work, and fused it with their own dynamic style, and created a truly compelling album. Well worth the wait.
